Academic specialization or vocational training?
In upper secondary education we distinguish between academic specialization and vocational education and training.
Academic specialization focuses on theoretical knowledge and qualifies the pupil for general admission to universities or colleges. The education programmes for this take three years in school. There are three academic specialization education programmes.
Vocational training leads the pupil to qualifying for a trade or craft and gives vocational competence with or without a journeyman’s certificate or craft certificate. Vocational training is a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical training. There are nine vocational education programmes in Norway. In most vocational educationprogrammes the first two years of education take place in a school, normally followed by two years of training in a company.
